The large intestine (See Gross Anatomy: see Midgut, Hindgut) begins in the right iliac region, where it is joined to the end of the ileum at the cecum, via the ileocecal valve.

Its main function is to reabsorb water, electrolytes, and vitamins.

It stores waste material as feces before being removed by defecation.
